Popularity

If I had a nickel for every time I promised I would never like Doug again... Honestly, it's kind of ridiculous.

Anyhow, I feel so bad for my poor misguided preteen self. I basically said that I would have rather been stupid and attractive than smart and ugly. Aw. Sad. That's middle school for you. Middle school was the first time popularity became an issue. All I wanted was to be pretty, funny, popular, and to have boys like me. The last thing I wanted to be was a nerd.

Apparently in high school I said "F all that" and gave up on the whole popularity thing. However, I don't remember whether my participation in
Drama Club, National Honor Society, and Key Club in high school was responsible for sabotaging my popularity pursuit or whether I gave up on popularity first and then joined those activities. I think it was probably the latter because I don't really remember anyone caring about popularity in high school. Probably mainly because I went to a big high school and everyone kind of did their own thing.

But the "new" issue of popularity in middle school caused those years to be especially interesting and full of drama. It sure as hell sucked at the time, but you gotta love looking back at it now for its entertainment value!

Valentine's Dance

Sorry I haven't posted in a couple days... I'm have a nasty cold and I'm trying to fight it with lots of sleep. Yuck.

But now, here's the monster five-page diary entry I promised...

First of all, on the first page, the green and pink fingerprints are my own. On the first pink print from the right, you can see my scar from the tuna fish can incident. Pretty bad ass, right?

Welp, looks like Lindsay was right- Rob really did just want a girlfriend to make out with. He must have been pretty determined to fulfill that goal because he certainly picked an easy target... I remember Danielle having a reputation for moving pretty quickly with guys (probably meaning she had made out with a handful of boys... while my friends and I hadn't even held hands with a boy yet).

Aw crap, I like Doug AGAIN? Nooooo! You know, if a guys hands are sweating when he dances with you, that's a SURE sign he likes you. Seriously? Maybe his hands were sweating because he was so uncomfortable. Wouldn't anyone be uncomfortable slow dancing to Waterfalls (a not-so-slow song)? Ugh. What were we thinking?

First Middle School Dance

Ohhhh middle school dances. What awkward events they were. Girls would spend most of their time begging boys to dance with them, and if the boy said no, the girl would spend the rest of the dance bawling by the bleachers. My friend's mom once commented after a night of chaperoning that she could make a fortune selling tissues to crying girls at middle school dances. I remember undefensively agreeing with her because I thought that since she was trying to profit off of it instead of put a stop to it, she was acknowledging that it was totally normal for myself and other girls to cry over boys in public. And so we continued to cry...

Meanwhile, who knows what the boys were doing. Probably trying to fend off the girls, regretting their decision to come to the dance, and waiting impatiently to get picked up by their parents. I wonder how Doug and other guys explained the holes in their shirts when their moms did laundry later.

While all this drama was going on, was anyone even paying attention to the music and realizing that some of the songs the DJ was playing would forever be among the most perverted songs we've heard in our lifetime?

"Step back you're dancing kinda close. I feel a little poke coming through on you."

"If you're horny, let's do it. Ride it, my pony."

Seriously? They let us listen to this? It's a good thing I probably didn't even know what these songs meant at the time. I'm just glad that I only remember kids slow dancing at these dances. I don't have any memories of kids grinding at middle school dances... and thank god because thinking about 12 year olds dancing like that now really freaks me out.
